ACODA - Characters EP

ACODA, a Northamptonshire-based band formed from the ashes of This Ocean Between, have finally released their eagerly anticipated free EP 'Characters'. To see a band giving away their music for free is so refreshing and will certainly do their bid for fame and fortune no harm at all.

The six-track EP sees a band who really matured under their previous guise finally producing something that could get them noticed. This is a band who have toured the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia and Croatia and they have evidently learnt a lot on their travels. 'Characters' offers everything you could possibly ask for in a hardcore/screamo band - brutal screams, catchy riffs, gorgeous singing and beautiful harmonies.

The first two tracks on the CD, 'Sleeping Escapade' and 'A Stolen Car Passing', immediately show you what the band is all about. Frantic drumming and deep screams flow effortlessly into melodic guitar and almost haunting singing. Both of these tracks will have you nodding your head before you know it.

'A Dark Passenger' really brings out the hardcore in the band. A song with lyrics composed using only dialogue from popular television programme 'Dexter', it really shows what this band has to offer. It is a song which couldn't fail to be stunning when played live, with such energy portrayed on the CD version.

Next song 'Just...' is the most melodic song on the EP and can almost be seen as an interlude. Showcasing the softer side of the musicians and proving that metal can be melodic too, it is the perfect link between 'A Dark Passenger' and 'Trains'.

The last songs on the EP, 'Trains' and 'Distractions', offer a final taste of the truly beautiful sound ACODA have managed to achieve on this release. I have not been so impressed by a debut EP in a very long time. Watch this space - this band are surely destined for the top.
